Your irreverent guide to questions you wouldn’t want to ask your own doctor.

Every and all answers are strictly my opinion based on my own experience and medical knowledge. My qualifications are none. I worked as a RN, BSN in cardiology for 10 years and had several years of general medical nursing experience prior to that. As always, consult your personal physician for advice and treatment. This column is not meant to take the place of regular physician visits.

It is merely an insight to my opinion on various topics.

Humpty Dumpty and the Marathon...What Should You Do?

Well, the discussion came up last year at this time about doing the Humpty Dumpty the night before the marathon. Now for those of you who don't know, it's not a ride at Circus Circus or a child's game you buy at the toy store; it is, in fact, the Humpty... Take the "ty" off if you still don't get it!

There were some who said it was definitely a benefit to their performance and there were some of the school that thought they should not expend too much energy on such a thing the night before the race. Not to mention, you definitely have to shower then in the morning!

I thought I would try to come up with some scientific evidence that might shed some light on the benefits or lack of benefits for this intriguing subject.

Here is a link to a great overall article but it doesn't address specifically the issue of sex before a marathon.

Here is an article that addresses it but is by no means scientific.

Here is are some excellent articles that deals completely with the issue:

Overall the "evidence" seems to suggest that the notion of abstaining has since been disproved and that there are benefits to sex before an endurance event. Heck, for some of you it may BE an endurance event!

I guess, as with anything, I would recommend that you test it out~ before a long run, to see how it affects your running the next day. AS we all know the cardinal rule of the marathon is to NOT TRY ANYTHING NEW in the upcoming days before the race.
